What is student engagement?
Student engagement is defined as the level of involvement they have in their learning. It’s not only something that we need to encourage or reward, but it’s a skill that everyone needs to develop. Why is student engagement important?

Engagement is a key component of student success and it has been shown statistically that students who spend less time in school are less likely to graduate, as well as perform better on standardized tests and have lower grades.
Although there isn’t an exact science for determining engagement, it is important to make an effort to build a positive relationship with each student because this will lead to the ultimate goal of raising their level of engagement.
How to engage students in learning
Teach them through the experience of creating, designing, building and solving challenging problems. Teach them with hands-on projects that require critical thinking, designing, researching and creative problem solving. Use a variety of tools for learning like art supplies for creative expression, technology for problem solving and physical activities to develop motor skills.
Create Meaningful Work
For example: Engineering Design Projects – build a robot using Lego blocks; Science Projects – create a worm movie; Electronics projects – build your own radio; Artistic endeavors, music and dance lessons are great ways to stimulate students’ imaginations.
Engage quiet students
Quiet students need to be engaged, not just by asking them questions while they are in class, but also when they are working alone. Ask them how their day went. Let them tell you about their experiences in the classroom.
Make it clear that you care about what they have to say and use this opportunity to teach about life outside of school. Teach them the importance of listening to others and that there is a difference between being quiet and being reserved.
Why is being relevant important in student engagement?
It is important to be relevant because it engages students, who might otherwise become distracted. It also gives the school and college some identifiable identity to market to other students, parents and alumni.
How to Measure Student Engagement
We can look at the engagement of students by frequency as well as quantity. You could utilize a program that will show you a monthly graph of student engagement and how it varies throughout the course.
During class, students can show their interest in the material by asking questions or responding to others. If a student doesn’t understand what is being discussed, they can provide a good-natured question to get help from the teacher or classmates.
The effectiveness of any lesson plan is directly proportional to how many students participate during class and whether they continue to ask questions after class or simply forget about class during the next few days.It’s also important for teachers to evaluate student participation outside of class – this means conducting surveys and collecting feedback through quizzes and attendance logs.
